I joined Jumia fresh out of an MBA program in 2012. Just like every other enthusiastic new hire, I wore a dry cleaned suit and tie on my first day of work. I remember being welcomed by the CEO who was wearing a t-shirt, shorts and slippers. I could not get over how he was dressed and I was already doubting my decision to join the company. After getting introduced to the talent from different IVY League schools and experienced professionals that the company had attracted, I knew this was going to be something big and I had to stick around to be a part of the success story. 5 years down the line, I am glad that I get to wear my Jumia t-shirt and jeans to work daily and also occasionally wear shorts on Fridays and weekends.
